How to Read Your Astrocartography Map: A Beginner's Guide

Astrocartography, also known as locational astrology or relocation astrology, is a fascinating tool that maps your birth chart onto the Earth. Imagine a world map overlaid with lines that show where your planets rise, set, or reach peak influence. Those places are where specific planetary energies are most alive for you.

If you’ve ever felt mysteriously drawn to a city or uncomfortable in a region for no clear reason - astrocartography can shed light on why.

How Your Astrocartography Map is Created

Your map is generated using your natal birth chart:

  • Birth date

  • Exact birth time

  • Birthplace

The accuracy of your map depends heavily on having your exact birth time. Even a 10–15 minute difference can shift lines significantly.

When calculated, your map shows lines for each planet across the globe. Each line is connected to an angular point (like the AC, DC, MC, or IC), amplifying its influence in that location.

Quick Guide to the Planetary Lines

Each planetary line holds distinct meanings. Here’s a simple overview:

  • ☀️ Sun Line: Vitality, identity, visibility, personal power

  • 🌙 Moon Line: Emotions, intuition, home, family

  • Mercury Line: Communication, learning, networking

  • Venus Line: Love, beauty, harmony, artistic inspiration

  • Mars Line: Action, drive, ambition, sometimes conflict

  • Jupiter Line: Growth, expansion, opportunity, abundance

  • Saturn Line: Responsibility, structure, discipline, lessons

  • Uranus Line: Change, freedom, surprises, innovation

  • Neptune Line: Dreams, spirituality, illusions, escapism

  • Pluto Line: Transformation, empowerment, intensity

  • Chiron Line: Healing, vulnerability, teaching

Pro tip: These are not universal guarantees. A planet’s effect depends on its strength, dignity, and aspects in your natal chart. For example, a challenged Venus line may not automatically bring ease in relationships, whereas a well-placed Mercury line can enhance communication or learning wherever you go.

Distance from Lines

You don’t need to be exactly on a line to feel its energy. Most astrologers suggest an orb of influence of ~300 miles (~500 km) up to 600 miles. Within this range, planetary energies are active and you will feel them in proportion to how close you are to the line.

  • Example: Being directly on a Sun line will very incredibly intense, while being 175 mi away from it is still very powerful. Being 300 mi away makes it a bit weaker in strength.

Why This All Matters

By understanding the planetary energies, you can choose where to:

  • Relocate for career opportunities or finding a sense of home

  • Travel for healing or growth

  • Connect more deeply with each place you travel, knowing what energy is there to shape it

Astrocartography doesn’t dictate your fate - it reveals potential. When you know the energies at play, you can make more empowered decisions about where you live, work, or wander.
